PROGRAM 04 / ESTABLISHED 2017
LATTICE
Computational matter
The material is part of the calculation.
Physical substrates that sense, compute, and retain constraints without returning every decision to a central processor.

01 / Approach
LATTICE fabricates ceramic networks whose local electrical and mechanical responses perform constrained inference in place. A separate, conventional authority layer verifies the permitted response envelope. Damaged regions can be bypassed; the material cannot vote to relax its own limits.
02 / Selected finding
In the L-31 panel series, a 1.2-metre adaptive surface retained its declared vibration-control envelope after 18 percent of its computational cells were disconnected. Local response settled within 900 microseconds without a round trip to an external processor.
03 / Evidence boundary
The result concerns a manufactured test panel under six calibrated load profiles. It is neither a general-purpose intelligence nor a material that repairs itself. Removed cells remained removed.
04 / Ongoing inquiry
Current work examines how an embodied model can be retired when its learned response is useful but its calibration history is no longer trustworthy.
Associated records.
D-0 / PUBLIC EDITIONSThe material keeps its limits
A damaged computational surface continues to respond. Its authority does not expand with the damage.
